Extra-Curricular Activities

Educational Visits

The school firmly believes in the value of extending children’s education beyond the school premises so educational trips and visits are organised to support the learning of children across the school. We ask parents and carers to contribute towards the costs of these trips (which are kept to a minimum) but will always try to ensure that parents and carers are given plenty of notice so that out of school visits or events visiting school, particularly more expensive ones (e.g. PGL Liddington which is a residential visit) may be paid for in instalments..

Our educational enrichment opportunities during the 2025-2026 academic year included:

• Curriculum-linked visits to museums, universities, science centres, farms, theatres, and historical sites
• In-school workshops covering topics such as science, history, geography, computing, literature, and the arts
• Visits from authors, musicians, scientists, astronauts, religious leaders, emergency services, and community organisations
• Partnerships with local schools, universities, and educational providers including Headington Rye, Trinity College, Oxford Brookes University, IntoUniversity, and Magdalen College School
• Music enrichment through concerts, specialist teaching, choirs, instrumental workshops, ukulele lessons, and visiting performers from the London Symphony Orchestra
• Science enrichment including Science Week, planetarium experiences, robotics workshops, the Curiosity Cube, and trips to science centres and colleges
• Cultural and historical experiences through museum visits, themed curriculum days, interfaith learning, Black History Month workshops, and religious visitors
• Outdoor learning opportunities including farm visits, wildlife parks, local area studies, Forest School, Outdoor Learning Days, and residential experiences such as PGL
• Safety and personal development workshops delivered by the police, firefighters, PCSOs, Junior Citizens, IMPS, Bikeability, and mental health specialists
• Sporting and wellbeing experiences through rugby, cricket, tennis, dance, and Active Future workshops
• Reading, language, and academic support through Bookmark volunteers, Jacari tutors, Young Interpreters, Trinity maths tutoring, and university outreach programmes

Recent highlights have included visits to Cadbury World, Paultons Park, Cotswold Wildlife Park, the Ashmolean Museum, the Oxfordshire Museum, Winchester Science Centre, Silverstone, and Radley College, as well as special experiences such as mounted police visits, a Royal Ballet workshop, an astronaut visit, a mobile planetarium, and live World Book Day events.

Through these experiences, pupils develop curiosity, aspiration, confidence, cultural awareness, and a deeper understanding of the world around them. We are proud to offer a broad and varied programme of enrichment that helps every child create lasting memories while enhancing their learning.

Forest School

At SCC, all children take part in our Forest School programme, which forms an important part of our curriculum and commitment to outdoor learning. Situated within our school grounds, our Forest School provides pupils with regular opportunities to learn, explore, and develop in a natural environment.

Through Forest School, children benefit from:

• Developing confidence, resilience, and self-esteem
• Building positive relationships and social skills through collaborative activities
• Enhancing physical development through outdoor exploration and practical challenges
• Gaining a deeper understanding of the natural world and environmental sustainability
• Developing problem-solving, creativity, and independence
• Fostering curiosity, motivation, and a positive attitude towards learning
• Experiencing curriculum-linked activities in an engaging outdoor setting

Our Forest School programme is led by a specialist Forest School teacher, ensuring high-quality experiences for all pupils. We have also continued to develop and enhance this valuable learning environment through support from our local community, including The ARC Science Park. This partnership has enabled us to further improve the area and provide even richer opportunities for children to connect with nature, develop new skills, and enjoy meaningful outdoor learning experiences.

Jack Peers Centre

At SCC, all children take part in regular visits to the Jack Peers Centre, which forms an important part of our curriculum and wider commitment to personal development, wellbeing and inclusion. The Jack Peers Centre provides a calm, nurturing environment where children can learn through practical experiences, develop positive relationships and build confidence away from the traditional classroom.

Through our Jack Peers Centre programme, children benefit from:

  • Developing confidence, resilience and self-esteem through new experiences and personal challenges
  • Building positive relationships, communication skills and teamwork through collaborative activities
  • Strengthening emotional wellbeing through nurturing, therapeutic approaches and opportunities for reflection
  • Developing independence and life skills through practical, hands-on learning experiences
  • Enhancing problem-solving, creativity and resilience through engaging activities
  • Learning to care for others, themselves and their environment, fostering a strong sense of responsibility and belonging
  • Accessing curriculum-linked learning in a meaningful, practical setting that supports all learners

The Jack Peers Centre is led by experienced members of our pastoral and therapeutic team, ensuring that every child can access high-quality, inclusive experiences tailored to their needs. Throughout the year, children take part in a wide range of activities including cooking, gardening, arts and crafts, wellbeing sessions, team-building activities and seasonal projects, all designed to support their social, emotional and academic development. The centre has become a valued part of school life, providing children with opportunities to flourish, develop confidence and build the skills they need to succeed both in school and beyond.
